Proefnotitie
Een diep robijnrode kleur die naarmate de wijn ouder wordt overgaat in een granaatrood. Het bouquet heeft een bijzonder karakter met aroma's van zwarte kersen, bramen, frambozen, viooltjes, zoethout, vanille en een lichte hint van roze peper. In de mond toont hij een warme en fluwelige smaak die rijk is aan inhoud en haast niet wil eindigen.

This has a complex nose of cranberries, dried pineapple, soy, bark, cardamom, mocha, iodine and wet leather. Full-bodied, with firm and very fine tannins. It really builds in intensity, expanding into a broad array of fresh and dried fruit and espresso bean, before converging again on a long and driven finish. Fantastic already.

The word "Vigna" has been added to the official name of this wine to underline work in the appellation meant to focus on single-vineyard designates. The Altesino 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli comes from a unique growing site with some of the best exposures from hillside vineyards. This wine shows a slightly dark hue with added concentration and depth. I am delighted by the bouquet that reveals dark cherry, blue flower, crushed stone and grilled herb. There is sweet toast and spice at the back. This is one of the more complete and age-worthy wines from the 2018 vintage. However, my biggest hesitation is the very high 15% alcohol content of this 13,000-bottle release.

Attractive smoky perfume lifts from the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli, with sunny red plum, anise, lavender, and cedar. It is full-bodied, with a refined tannin structure, and a bit more wood influence that will integrate nicely in time. Offering notes of black cherry, licorice, crushed stones, and warming spice, it displays a broader nature compared to the rest of the range, which is to be expected from this iconic site with a somewhat warmer, south-facing exposition.

De wijn
De bijzondere aandacht die Altesino aan brunello besteedt, blijkt ook uit het concept van de Cru: Montosoli is namelijk één enkele wijngaard van ongeveer vijf hectare groot in het noordoosten van Montalcino (op een hoogte tussen de 350 en 400 meter), waarvan de druiven na de oogst in 1975 voor het eerst apart vergist en gerijpt werden. De samenstelling van de bodem (mergelachtige en kiezelachtige kalksteen uit de tijd van de Alberese met lithoïde bestanddelen uit dezelfde tijd), de unieke locatie en het bijzondere microklimaat dragen bij aan de rijping van de druiven die een zeer complexe en elegante wijn doen ontstaan. Wine Spectator ziet Montosoli als een van de twee belangrijkste enkele wijngaarden in Italië.
