Proefnotitie
De ‘Magnolia’ Shiraz met 95 punten betovert met tonen van verse tabak en donkere specerijen zoals anijs, jeneverbes en piment, bresaola, kruiden en een vleugje houtskool. De rijpe fruitaroma’s van bramen, gojibessen en cassis maken dit spektakel compleet. Naast alle rijkdom en sappigheid is er een koele, minerale toets in de mond. Dit zorgt samen met de fijne tannines en het indrukwekkende volume van de wijn voor een onvergetelijke smaakbeleving.

The 2021 Magnolia Shiraz is composed of 100% Shiraz from the organically farmed Magnolia vineyard in Vine Vale, Barossa Valley. The vineyard was planted over a number of years—1996 (53%), 2010 (28%) and 2017 (19%)—on deep granitic sands and a section of shallower sands with mica and rose quartz overlying podzolic clay, at an elevation of 305 to 335 meters above sea level. So, to the wine here before me: there are notes of satsuma plums, rose petals, black cherry, raspberry leaf tea and anise leaves and flowers. It's like running your hands over fresh garden herbs. In the mouth, the wine is mouthwatering, delicate, lacy even. The whole bunch lends characters of coal dust, chinotto, orange zest, coffee grounds and cocoa, all the while supporting the diaphanous fruit, which has a bloody quality, not unlike good Grenache. Ripping wine here. I love it. 14.7% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Fruit from 1965 plantings on the Eperosa Magnolia Road block in Vine Vale at the base of the Barossa Range. Super-vibrant magenta in the glass with plush plum, blue and dark berry fruits with an array of exotic spices, citrus blossom, bunchy amaro notes, blueberry pie, licorice, liminal garrigue notes, graphite and dark chocolate dipped cherries. Super glossy and pure fruit and a filigreed palate with tight, fine sandy tannin and plenty of mineral energy finishing firmly structured and draped in plummy fruits.

De grote drie: pizza, hamburger, steak. Doet het ook goed bij streetfoodfavorieten zoals pulled pork.
De wijn
De Magnolia Vineyard ligt in de subregio Vine Vale van de Barossa Valley op een hoogte van iets meer dan 300 meter boven zeeniveau, waar de druiven profiteren van de invloed van een koele wind. De oudste wijnstokken dateren uit 1896 en zijn geworteld in schist, leisteen, kwarts en klei. De druiven werden met de voeten gekneusd, fermenteerden drie weken met de droesem, werden geperst in de mandpers en rijpten 18 maanden in Franse eikenhouten vaten.
