Proefnotitie
De ‘Riesling Ried Edelschuh Große STK’ schittert licht strogeel met gouden reflecties in het glas. Het gelaagde bouquet onthult licht steenfruit, een vleugje mandarijn en bloesemhoning, omlijst door fijne minerale tonen. In de mond is de wijn sappig en zuiver, met een pure textuur, frisse zuren en een lichtvoetig en levendig karakter. De aantrekkelijke aroma’s komen terug in de smaak, verrijkt met toetsen van ananas en passievrucht en een markante mineraliteit. In de lange, aanhoudende afdronk komt ook een vleugje wijngaardperzik naar voren.

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Fine nuances of yellow tropical fruit, a touch of peach, some saffron, pleasant slate spice, a hint of chamomile. Complex, taut, tight-knit, bone-dry style, very persistent, white peach fruit on the finish, lemony aftertaste, great ageing potential.

From vines up to 70 years old and very low yields, Wohlmuth's 2021 Ried Edelschuh Riesling GSTK opens with an intense and floral, bright and stony bouquet with good fruit concentration and saline notes. Round and intense on the palate, this is a rich but elegant, persistently saline and stringent Edelschuh with intensity, finesse and tension. From an altitude of 460 to 530 meters above sea level and red and dark-colored slate terroir, the 2021 Edelschuh is pure, grippy and still challenging in its astringency since it contains less than two grams per liter of residual sugar. Due to low yields, this is rich in extract, whereas acidity and pH values represent a cool vintage. "For me, 2021 is probably the most exciting vintage in my winemaking career," says Wohlmuth, who explains, "The Riesling from the Ried Edelschuh is always the warmer and more powerful style compared to the Ried Dr. Wunsch (which I reviewed in the November 2022 Week 2 issue). Nevertheless, it shows its cool, spicy slate terroir." 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in Grafenegg in September 2023.

De wijn
In de wijngaard Edelschuh zijn de wijnstokken in sommige gevallen tot 70 jaar oud. Ze groeien op extreem steile hellingen op een hoogte van ongeveer 460-530 meter op rode en zwarte leisteen. De schrale bodem dwingt de wijnstokken om heel diep te wortelen, wat resulteert in een geweldige aromatische dichtheid en mineraliteit in de wijnen. Voor de ‘Riesling Edelschuh Große STK’ worden de druiven zo laat mogelijk met de hand geplukt en streng geselecteerd. Na een korte maceratieperiode volgt een langzame, zachte persing. De spontane gisting vindt plaats in grote houten vaten, waar de wijn vervolgens 18 maanden rijpt op de droesem.
